Wright says he hopes Thred becomes the destination pulling in yours and friends’ posts from a range of app sources.īut Wright is walking what seems a fine line between Facebook’s use case of the broadcasted photo album, Instagram’s solo image and Snapchat’s ephemeral story. Another feature combines your photos with location tracking to map your day. In addition to its content creation, Thred is built on a linking system called Storyweb that combines all the ways we might tag something into one, hashtag, user mention and location alike. But as I played with the app, I wondered how that community would handle more negative characters, or whether it would even rise out of the brutal back pages of App Store rankings. The small Thred community, at launch, feels like the beginning of something creative, light-hearted and positive. Quickly I saw a thred of photos of Madonna kissing other celebrities, then one trying to highlight the day’s gaming news in bite-sized captions. Thred recommends certain featured threds, but I found it much more fun to switch to the stream of everyone, at least while the group is small. If people do, they may find Thred’s navigation and discovery relative weak points of the app at first. How the Thred community will credential or trust influential posters to appropriately source their content, both facts and the images themselves, remains to be seen.įirst, Thred needs a community to show up. Wright’s most recent thred, “Russian Space Stories,” is just one slide-but consisting of three labeled and illustrated links, each to its own dedicated thred telling a lesson of Russian space history, a mini class Powerpoint reduced down to a phone. The combinations feel creative and chaotic, much like the creatures of Wright’s most recent major game release, 2008’s Spore. You can add photos from online, links, whatever you want.

Imagine the filters from Instagram or the captioning of Snapchat, but combined with an Internet-connected comic book. The biggest difficulty using Thred is the amount of options it boasts. The whole process took about five minutes. Oracle CEO Mark Hurd, ever the salesman, a light bulb. I selected six photos from my phone and proceeded to add captions, then went for the fun: the stickers of people, animals, food and costumes-that can be resized and layered on.

The night before launch, I tested my own first thred-you can check it out at my username alex_konrad-of a recent work trip I took to San Francisco.
